Hot off the Needles đ„ - my Sheep Camp sweater! đ đ
I fell madly, deeply in love with this design when I spotted it in the Instagram feed of Jennifer Berg, aka @nativeknitter who will be featured in the upcoming Knit Stars Masterclass Season 6. Jennifer lives and designs on a Navajo reservation near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her work is inspired by the beautiful creations of her people, and her color palettes reflect the richness of her culture.
Jennifer designed the Sheep Camp sweater to capture the feeling of a more simple life - the life of her grandmother, who was a shepherdess. The light sweater features a yoke with an arrow design that reminds the wearer to keep breathing, in and out, in and out.
For the yarn, I rang up my friend Terra of Mitchellâs Fiber Creations, who hand-dyes the softest DK base I could think of -Â Audubon DK 50/50 merino/silk. She dyed up the PERFECT pale aqua (âFrenchmanâ) for the main color, and two choices for the contrast color. After a neck-and-neck Instagram poll, I went with âBoyfriend Jeansâ for my CC.
I cast on the sweater on the plane to Iceland! And boy, has this sweater been around the block. Itâs seen a volcano, a black beach, a waterfall, the famous Blue Lagoon and so much more!Â
And now my Sheep Camp sweater is happily back at home with me in Tulsa, finished and ready to sail with me into fall, and the Grand Opening of our flagship Knit Stars store October 1-2. Jennifer herself shared the finished sweater on her IG, adding âThe merino and silk yarn by Terra is gorgeous and compliments the Sheep Camp Sweater so well! The contrast is striking and the hand-dyed yarn makes each stitch unique.â
You can pre-order the Mitchellâs Audubon merino/silk yarn to make your very own Sheep Camp Sweater here (weâve even got a bit of a the lovely brown, too!). If you make one, be sure to post photos of your adventures in it, using #sheepcampsweater and @knitstars đ
Pre-order yarn for your Sheep Camp Sweater here. It will be dyed to order and shipped to you in 2-3 weeks.
Blueberries are often known for their starring role in pancakes and muffins, but we think this gin fizz from Super Golden Bakes could be their next place to shine. Not only is this a tasty + refreshing cocktail worthy of a summer afternoon, itâs a visual treat as well. Wouldnât these colors make a great palette for a hand-dyed yarn? Ya, we thought so too. đ
Ingredients:
100 g | 3.5oz | 1 cup fresh or frozen and defrosted blueberries
2 tbsp simple syrup or 1 tbsp sugar
4 tbsp fresh lemon juice from one large lemon
2 tbsp egg white
100 ml | 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp gin
2 dashes Angostura Bitters optional
lemon peel to serve
Instructions:
- Put the blueberries, lemon juice, simple syrup (or sugar) in a glass or measuring jug and muddle with the back end of a rolling pin (or a muddler).
- Add the muddled blueberries into your shaker.
- Add the gin, bitters and egg white and shake vigorously to foam up the egg white. Be careful as the egg white will expand and your shaker might leak.
- Add plenty of ice into your shaker and shake for 30 seconds.
- Strain the cocktail into two rocks glasses filled with ice. Decorate with a slice of lemon peel.
Notes:
If you want a really smooth cocktail, strain the muddled blueberries and extract the juice before adding to your shaker.
